Workforce Development

The Su Materials Lab is passionate about training the next generation of scientists and engineers. We participate in multiple programs to provide opportunities for students and postdocs to come to Berkeley Lab for research and career & professional development.

CAMPS - A partnership between Berkeley Lab and Navajo Technical University

CAMPS (Controlling Additive Manufacturing Properties of Surfaces) is a partnership with Navajo Technical University (NTU). CAMPS supports internship programs for NTU students to come to Berkeley Lab and to gain research experience and engage in career and professional development opportunities. CAMPS internships are integrated within Berkeley Lab's Workforce Development & Education program. The research objectives of CAMPS are to understand and control the microstructure of metal alloys fabricated via 3D printing. CAMPS held its first internship in the summer of 2024, hosting three students from NTU at Berkeley Lab.

Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internships (SULI)

We participate in the SULI program to host undergraduates from across the U.S. for internships during the summer or academic year. For more information, please the the Berkeley Lab's WD&E SULI program page.

DOE Office of Science Graduate Student Research (SCGSR) Program

The DOE SCGSR program provides PhD candidates opportunities to conduct part of the thesis research at a DOE national laboratory to leverage the expertise and capabilities national laboratories offer. Applications are typically due around early May and early November. Please contact us if you are interested.

ALS Doctoral & Postdoctoral Fellowships

The ALS hosts a Doctoral Fellowship and a Collaborative Postdoctoral Fellowship. Both of these programs provide opportunities for graduate students or postdocs, respectively, to spend one year conducting research at the ALS and working closely with ALS staff and the broader LBNL community. Please check the websites for application calls, and reach out if you are interested.

SAGE Camp

Science Accelerating Girls' Engagement in STEM (SAGE) is a one-week summer camp for Northern California high school students hosted by Berkeley Lab to share what life is like in STEM professions. Multiple members of the Su Materials Lab volunteer to participate in SAGE Camp.Â
